Server Automation Principles
by Howard Fosdick
As organizations evolve toward client/server systems, IS staffs that once managed a single centralized data center now are responsible for several database servers scattered throughout the company. One way of managing this complexity is to automate remote database and server administration. This article describes practical approaches to automating database server administration and maintenance, using current technology. The systems described in this article provide real-life examples of how near-complete server automation is possible in a complex, heterogeneous world.

Building a DBA Repository System, Part 2
by Martin Rennhackkamp
The purpose of a repository system is to record and manage the information about the data models and the designs and implementations of the enterprise databases, applications, and systems. Thus, the repository system records and manages enterprise metadata. But can you apply these application-centric repository principles to physical database management? This final article in a two-part series provides a step-by-step guide to doing just that.
