Features

Object-Relational Hybrids by Maurice Frank
Although RDBMSs proliferate, today's relational systems are not ideally suited for handling highly complex objects and complex data types. Similarly, object databases -- until recently -- have lacked important features such as querying, online backup and restore, and flexible concurrency control. Consequently, a new generation of hybrids -- object-relational databases -- have emerged to blend the best features of both models. DBMS Technical Editor Maurice Frank explores this technology, and examines the major software vendors in the ORDBMS market. Also, long-time ANSI member Jim Melton provides a sidebar on object extensions in the forthcoming SQL3 Standard.

Building a Customer Information Architecture by Jane Griffin
As companies face the challenge of rethinking the way they build and maintain customer relationships, they must focus on integrating their customer information to improve their competitiveness, productivity, and profitability. This article examines how a well-designed customer information architecture (CIA) and its supporting data warehouse make this goal possible.

Building a Logical Data Model, Part 3 by George Tillmann
In this third part of our logical data modeling series, George Tillmann lays the foundation for how to build, verify, and maintain a logical data model -- without going crazy.
