HOW LOGICAL

Logic Works Inc. announced ERwin 2.6, an upgrade to its database design tool family. ERwin 2.6 includes ERwin/ERX for database design, ERwin/OPEN for client/server development, and ERwin/Navigator for read-only access.

ERwin's new scalable product architecture supports read-only model access, database design and schema generation, and full client/server development in both 16- and 32-bit environments. The product also features "complete compare," which monitors how a modeling tool interacts with database systems and supports the entire development process. ERwin 2.6 performs a comprehensive comparison of all logical and physical objects. Complete compare also supports model-to-model and model-to-script synchronization.

ERwin 2.6 generates SQL alter scripts to update an existing schema. It automatically checks all schema dependencies and translates and preserves existing data when the schema is updated. The product supports current versions of all major SQL and desktop databases and adds new support for Borland InterBase, IBM DB2/2, and Red Brick Warehouse. ERwin/OPEN now generates data access components for PowerBuilder DataWindows, Visual Basic data-aware forms, and Progress SmartObjects directly from the ERwin model. ERwin 2.6 integrates with Logic Works ModelMart, a comprehensive workgroup model management system, providing security, model merging, and version control.

ERwin 2.6 requires a 486 or better, running Windows 3.x, Windows 95, or Windows NT, with at least 16MB of RAM and 25MB of hard-disk space.

Logic Works' new DataBOT Visual Basic add-in accelerates Visual Basic application development. The model-driven development environment integrates back-end database design with Visual Basic application construction. DataBOT uses a Logic Works ERwin data model to speed construction of Visual Basic applications and manage runtime data access. DataBOT automatically generates the SQL queries needed to access a database, and it manages transactions including locking and result-set management for optimized data access.

DataBOT requires a 486 or better, running Windows 95 or Windows NT, with a minimum 32MB of RAM and 25MB of hard-disk space.

ON PATROL

BMC Software Inc. announced that its Patrol Management Suite will now include data management product solutions. Through a standard interface across heterogeneous platforms and databases, these products provide "management by objective" capabilities for the administration, movement, and protection of data and databases across a distributed enterprise. The four product areas with the data management line are: data replication, which lets users move data among multiple relational and non-relational DBMS platforms; database backup and recovery management, which automates many of the processes involved in database backup and recovery; high performance utilities, which give users a proactive approach to ensuring optimal database performance; and database administration.

The new database administration tools include Patrol DB-Change Manager (which enhances an administrator's ability to manage enterprise database environments and improves database integrity, consistency, and reliability) and Patrol DB-Integrity (which discovers invalid objects by automatically analyzing the integrity of all static and compiled objects, spaces, and linkages in the database). Patrol DB-Reorg ensures maximum data availability through the reorganization of databases, enhanced database performance, and better utilization of disk space.

Patrol DB-Stats enables space management and performance tuning of databases through the delivery of detailed statistics. Patrol DB-Basics Admin provides entry-level database administration functionality for Informix databases to increase DBA productivity, as well as the availability, integrity, and reliability of data and databases. Patrol DB-Basics Utilities functions include the loading and unloading of data, exporting and importing of databases, and archiving and recovering of data.

Patrol DB-Voyager (formerly MetaDesk) lets administrators browse the data dictionary, objects, and data from multiple DBMSs, navigate within and between data dictionaries, and automatically create SQL queries and view results. Patrol DB-Alter (formerly MetaManage) improves database reliability and availability and reduces data administration errors.

PRO STORAGE

Object Design Inc. announced ObjectStore PSE Pro products for Java and C++. These persistent storage engines for desktop applications use minimal memory and give developers of single-user, desktop applications capabilities for managing, storing, and retrieving Java and C++ objects. ObjectStore PSE Pro provides multidatabase connectivity capabilities and transaction-level database recovery.

When using ObjectStore PSE Pro, developers do not have to write extra application code to store objects. Also, developers do not have to translate an application's object model to a relational or sequential data model when information is stored or retrieved.

ObjectStore PSE Pro for Java provides Java applets and applications with transaction-oriented support for multiple, medium-sized persistent object databases. ObjectStore PSE Pro for C++ provides persistent storage for ActiveX components, plug-ins, and desktop applications.

ObjectStore PSE Pro for Java requires less than 250K of memory and runs on Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0, and Solaris 2.4 and 2.5. It is compatible with the Sun Java Development Kit, the Sun Java Development Kit with Symantec JIT, Symantec Cafe, and Microsoft Visual J++. ObjectStore PSE Pro for C++ needs less than 300K of memory and runs on Windows 95 and Windows NT; it is compatible with Microsoft Visual C++. Both products are compatible with ANSI C++ and MFC.
