Database Lite

The "lite" fad has finally made its way to the high-tech industry, with Oracle Corp.'s much-anticipated release of Personal Oracle Lite. It is the first relational database to fit in less than 1MB of memory and just 10MB of disk space, and it costs a mer e $195 per user. Personal Oracle Lite is a lightweight relational database engine as well as an object database, with the Oracle Navigator drag-and-drop GUI environment for managing database objects.

Developers can use Personal Oracle Lite with Oracle's other development tools to deploy database applications. Oracle plans to replace Blaze, the relational database within Oracle Power Objects, with Personal Oracle Lite. The Oracle Software Manager prov ides a central graphical console that lets administrators update software on remote systems automatically through dial-up or mobile radio connections. Oracle Sales and Marketing, a sales force automation application, uses the Personal Oracle Lite mobile package to exchange information about new sales leads, forecast reporting, and fulfill literature requests by communicating with an enterprise server.

Personal Oracle Lite is currently available for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT. Support for Macintosh and bidirectional replication are forthcoming. Contact Oracle Corp., 500 Oracle Parkway, Redwood Shores, CA 94065; 415-506-7000 or fax 415-506- 7200; http://www.oracle.com.
